Introducing our MC for the 3v3 "Pop, Lock & Break it" battles this saturday!
Name: Taupuhi 'Taups' Toki
A.K.A: Bboy Papa Smurf
Age: 38
Nationality: Maori
City: Auckland
Crew: InStance Movement
Bboy Papa Smurf was inspired by hiphop at the age of 14 in 1997 and got in to breaking after seeing the music video of the big US hit "It's Like That" by Run DMC & Jason Nevins.
After starting InStance Movement crew at the age of 16 with Awa and Heath (both of Nesian Mystik), the crew won the first Raw Stylez national event in 1999 at Youthtown, Auckland. This was the 2nd wave of the breaking resurgence since the 1980s YMCA and Boppalympics competitions.
In 2001, for 6 years, he toured nationally and globally with Maori & Polynesian funky fusion dance company, Torotoro and Mika Haka. He was also part of a rock band called 'Mika and the Plastic Maoris' and 'New Native Dance' company.
From 2007 - 2011 he was part of NZ hiphop crew 'Odyssey' which competed at HHI in Nevada, Los Vegas in 2009.
In 2013 he re-formed 'InStance Movement' after a knee injury and surgery, bringing back old and inviting new members to compete again, building close to 10+ members.
In 2015 he coined the name 'Street Talk' and it was created alongside Dianamite. Its' slogan "Where faith meets hiphop culture" was borrowed by inspiration from the @krosswerdz events in Sydney, Australia. Inspired by the gospel, Street Talk has hosted numerous events not only for dancers but covering different elements of hiphop culture through workshops, events and a publication to date.
Bboy Papa Smurf has MC'ed at many events since 2001 and is excited to bring the hype to the Asian (Sound) Scapes event which this 3v3 battle is part of, at Potters Park.
